No Blindness from Diabetes – Retinopathy Screening Programme
🎯 Main Aim
-
Detect Early, Treat Early, and Save from Blindness
-
Accessible to all diabetic patients, irrespective of economic status
-
Special focus on young diabetics, as they often present late with severe vision loss
What is Diabetic Retinopathy?
Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is a complication of diabetes that damages the blood vessels in the retina.
In early stages, it may cause no symptoms.
In later stages, it can cause bleeding, swelling, and scarring inside the eye → leading to permanent blindness if untreated.
🔍 Why Regular Retina Screening Is Crucial for Diabetics
-
Globally, about one in four diabetics (~26%) have diabetic retinopathy (DR) at any given time.
-
Vision-threatening DR occurs in ~5% of diabetics
-
Without timely treatment, up to 50% of patients with proliferative changes may suffer severe vision loss or blindness in 5 years.
Benefits of Early detection and treatment
-
“98% vision loss preventable with early detection and treatment
-
“Repeated Intravitreal retina Injection of AntiVEGF~
98% avoid moderate loss; 33–46% gain big lines.”
-
“Risk of diabetic retinopathy increases by every year- 25% at 5years → 60% at 10years → 80% at 15 years - patients will have diabetic retinopathy.
