Lets Understand Our Eyes by Vedanta Netralya Ghaziabad

Our eyes and our visual system which enables us to see work hard every second while we are awake, broadcasting to us the  visual reality from a dizzying array of light-based impulses. Eyes are most important aspect of life but unfortunately We take vision for granted, in a nutshell our eyes and our ability to see are is the most imporatnt invention of evolutionary engineering.

More of the brain is dedicated to vision than to hearing, taste, touch, and smell combined. Sight is, arguably, our most important sense.

Now lets go through complete structure of eye and how it enables us to see.

Vision is an incredibly complex process that works so well, we never need to give it much thought.

How Eyes Work

The work of the visual system can be summarized as follows: light enters our pupil and is focused onto the retina at the back of the eye. The retina converts the light signal into electrical impulses. The optic nerve then carries the impulses to the brain where the signals are processed.

Anatomy of the eye

The tissues of the eye can be split into three types:

Refracting tissues that focus light
Light-Sensitive Tissues
Support Tissues

 Refracting tissues that focus light

Light Sensitive Tissues  (RETINA)

The retina is the innermost layer of the eye. It houses more than 120 million light-sensitive photoreceptor cells that detect light and convert it into electrical signals.

These signals are sent on to the brain for processing.

Photoreceptor cells in the retina contain protein molecules called opsins that are sensitive to light.

The two primary photoreceptor cells are called rods and cones. In response to particles of light, the rods and cones send out electrical signals to the brain.

Support Tissues

Sclera: This is commonly referred to as the white of the eye. It is fibrous and provides support for the eyeball, helping it keep its shape.

Conjunctiva: A thin, transparent membrane that covers most of the white of the eye, and the inside of the eyelids. It helps lubricate the eye and protect it from microbes.

Choroid: A layer of connective tissue between the retina and sclera. It contains a high concentration of blood vessels. It is just 0.5 mm thick and contains light-absorbing pigment cells that help reduce reflections in the retina.

Effect of Mobile Phones on your Eyes

This is a question that exist in every person,s mind , right from kids to the people who have gone through all phases of life.  Today everything runs on technology, and smart mobile phones are the biggest example of the same.

Mobile phones started as luxury item, soon became comfort and now turned into necessity. , right from communication , to entertainment , news , knowledge and now even banking is being done through smart mobile phones, no doubt it made our life very easy but along with advantages it has certain health issues also associated to it.

Mobile Phone Advantages - Vedanta Netralya Ghaziabad

Known health risks caused by smartphone use include neck issues, thumb strain, and the dangers of distracted driving (done either by you or someone else).

But does looking at your phone hurt your eyes?

Yes, smartphones can cause eye strain. In fact, it’s predicted that 2 out of every 3 Indians experience eye strain caused by excessive phone use. Dont worry—going the right way today can drastically reduce the risk of having smartphone-related eye problems in the future.

How Smartphones Can Harm Your Eyes ?

The average person looks at their smartphone 100 times or more per day and it can have a range of negative effects on your eye health.

Excessive time on your phone can lead to blurred vision, dry eyes, sore eyes, headaches, and even insomnia.

Blinking Less Often: Do you know that your eyes are supposed to blink about 14 to 16 times per minute. But when we stare at our smartphone, we give our eyes much less time to recover as ou blinking is reduced to half means 6 to 7 blinks per minute. .We dont care as  to how much we blink  blinking is very important for maintaining healthy eyes. Blinking helps our eyes to redistribute moisture, not letting it dry, blinking defends us  against excessive exposure to outside elements like dust and sunlight.

Eye Blinking

Squinting: You may not mind reading smaller text on a smartphone screen, but your eyes sure do. Squinting at on-screen text and videos overworks your muscles around your eyes, neck, and shoulders, and is is a major cause of eyestrain and blurred vision.

Squinting Problem - Vedanta Netralya Ghaziabad

Excessive Glare: Our eyes don’t like to stare directly at light for too long, so the glare from the light of your cell phone screen can cause serious eye strain. Checking your emails or social media in the dark, before or after bedtime, only makes the situation worse. In fact, your smartphone-induced health problems may not end with eye strain. Research has shown that spending time on your cell phone before bed can reduce melatonin production, making it harder for you fall or stay asleep.

Glare hurts our eyes

How To Protect Your Eyes While Using a Smartphone

As we know in todays world smartphones are essential to our lives and, but along with it brings their health risks.

Lets go through some simple precautions that we can undetake in order to minimize their risk of smartphone-related eye damage:

Turn Down the Glare: Reducing the glare from your screen will make phone use easier on your eyes and can also help you conserve battery life. Simply access your phone’s settings and adjust the brightness to a lower, more comfortable level.

Make your text size bigger : In small text we have to squint to read on our phone, try making the default font larger so that  on-screen text will become larger and easier to see.

Remember to Blink: It may sound strange, but reminding yourself to blink while using your smartphone can reduce the amount of strain you place on your eyes. By blinking more often, you’re helping your eyes retain moisture, repel irritants, and remain refreshed all day.

Take Breaks: This is our most important tip. It is also the hardest to follow. Taking breaks from your smartphone can drastically reduce the amount of strain placed on your eyes. For every 20 minutes spent on your smartphone, spend at least 20 seconds looking away. During those 20 seconds, do your best to stare at something in the distance (20 feet away or more).

Anything you see is an image that enters your eye in the form of light. Inside your eye is a lens, much like the lens of a camera. The lens focuses the light rays coming through the pupil onto the retina at the back of the eye. The different parts of the retina collect this light and send a message to your brain, enabling you to see. A cloudy lens is called a cataract. It is not a growth or a film over the eye.

Causes of Cataract

The most common cause of cataract is the denaturation of the normal protein structure within the lens of the eye with age. There may be other causes like diabetes, kidney disease, glaucoma, smoking, eye injuries, infection and inflammation inside the eye. Prolonged use of certain medications can also lead to cataract formation.

In the early stages, you can improve your vision by changing your glasses but once the cataract progresses changing glasses will not help. You will notice some deterioration in your ability to see things clearly from a distance. You may have difficulty with glare while driving or while performing activities like reading that require clear vision. Other symptoms may be colored halos, double or multiple images in the eye when the other eye is occluded.

A cataract may develop slowly over years or rapidly within months. Often the other eye will also be affected. There are no medications, eye drops or dietary restrictions that can cure or prevent cataract formation. If the cataract interferes with your regular activities the only solution is surgery.

In cataract surgery, an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) replaces your natural clouded lens. Your new lens should restore vision to nearly what it was earlier, though you may need to wear glasses for reading or driving.
